Synopsis

Furieux contre Robin qui s'est publiquement opposé à lui, le Shérif se rend à Locksley. Il y réunit tous les villageois, bien décidé à leur arracher des informations pouvant l'aider à retrouver le hors-la-loi. N'obtenant aucune réponse, il décide que toutes les heures un villageois aura la langue coupée. La torture commence ... Ne pouvant rester les bras croisés face à cette barbarie, Robin décide de se rendre au Shérif avant de s'échapper rapidement. Le Shérif découvre cependant la plus grande faiblesse de son ennemi.

Résumé

Humilié publiquement par Robin, le shérif se rend à Locksley afin dele retrouver. Il menace les habitants du village de donner Robin, sinon il coupera une langue toutes les heures. De son côté, Robin a quelques petits problèmes avec la bande de Petit Jean. Ils ne croient pas être du même côté, et Petit Jean croit que lui et Much sont des nobles ce qui n'arrange pas leurs affaires. Petit Jean revient à Locksley pour se rendre compte que la prochaine victime à perdre sa langue est sa femme. Robin ne peut pas rester impassible devant une telle injustice, alors il convainc Petit Jean de le laisser partir, disant qu'il peut sauver sa femme. Après une flèche bien tirée, Robin est capturé et emmené à Nottingham. Much tente de convaincre Petit Jean de se rendre à la ville pour libérer Robin. En prison, Robin reçoit la visite de Marian qui prétexte que le hors-la-loi lui a volé une bague. Elle l'aide à s'échapper. Robin menace le shérif de le tuer si une personne innocente est blessée dans le seul but de l'atteindre lui. Le Shérif n'en croit pas un mot. Parallèlement, Petit Jean et sa bande, accompagnés de Much et Allan se dirigent vers Nottingham et retrouvent Robin. La lutte contre le shérif ne fait que commencer...

Quand le Shérif menace Robin que le temps passe, il fait un bruit de "tic-tac". Les horloges pendules n'ont été inventées qu'au milieu du XVIIe siècle, et comme l'histoire se déroule à la fin du XIIIe siècle, il est impossible pour quelqu'un de cette époque de savoir ce que ce son évoque et signifie.

Shérif de Nottingham (aux habitants de Locksley) It is unfortunate. A man goes to war, his spirit can be damaged, his vision blurred, his understanding of law and order. This is what has happened to Robin. I have heard that there are camps in the Holy Land where men are taught to hate their own land, to return home to wreak havoc and destruction. Maybe this is what has happened to Robin? We don’t know. But what we do know is, that by his actions in Nottingham, your former master, he did not- as some of the romantics amongst you might believe- strike a blow for freedom. Make no mistake about it, he perverted the course of justice. And in so doing, he attacked the very fabric of our state. Hm? The state that we all work for, the state that we all pay our taxes for. He would rob us of that. Of our taxes, of our hard work.

Shérif de Nottingham (à Robin) Game? (se penchant face au visage de Robin) You don’t understand. (entre ses dents) You do not play games with me! (Robin sourit alors que le Shérif se redresse) You made a mistake in Nottingham, trying to be the peasants’ hero.
Robin (provocateur): Well, why don’t you be the peasants’ hero and show me how it’s done.
Shérif (sarcastique): Oh, shall we have a meeting in the morning... to discuss it? A clue: no. In the morning, you shall hang.

(Marian rend visite à Robin en prison)
Marian: You are an utter fool!
Robin: You said that already.
Marian: Oh, you listened? I also told you confronting the Sheriff wouldn't work. You didn't listen to that!
Robin: I did not have much choice.
Marian (froidement): Oh, everything's a choice. Everything we do. Grow up.
Robin (élevant le ton): I prevented unjust hangings. I protected people from my village
Marian (sarcastique): That will make your death romantic.
Robin(se défendant) : It would make it honorable!
Marian: Honorable? And what about the people you were so honorably protecting? Who will protect them when you're dead?... (puis, en baissant le ton) ...Oh! What is it with men and glory? Glory above sense and above reason?
Robin (amusé): It is principle.
Marian (très vite): Principle is making a difference and you can't do that if you're dead. You could have stayed here in the first place instead of following your King to the Holy Land if you'd cared so much about your precious people... (puis doucement) ...But you didn't. You chose war. You chose glory.
Robin se penche alors en avant, ses yeux plongés dans ceux de Marian.
Robin (avec douceur): What is this about?
Marian (évitant son regard): It is about you saying that you care about the people of Locksley when... the truth is you ran off to battle thousands of miles away.
